Cecil’s Horse Sanctuary aims to relieve the suffering of horses and ponies, who may be old, neglected, abandoned or otherwise in need of care and attention. Many of the residents go to them with physical and/or mental health problems – some requiring special diets or ongoing medical treatment.

One of our coffees is named after Cecil’s resident, Little Joe. Little Joe is a Miniature Shetland Pony who was abandoned in their field in 2015 at an estimated age of one year old. Although he is small he has a very big character! We went to meet Little Joe and he was a total sweetheart, chilling out with his friend, Faith, at the sanctuary.

The ponies live together in herds where they are cared for and loved in a forever home by the founder, Julie, and the volunteers. The sanctuary relies entirely on donations, events, open days and the hard work of the team. Horses are naturally trickle feeders which means they thrive off eating little and often. This means they need constant access to hay and, with so many ponies to feed, this really adds up, particularly in winter! Combined with veterinary care and farrier costs, donations are vital to running Cecil’s. It’s so heartwarming to be able to help the horses through Sanctuary Coffee donations and we couldn’t be happier to be supporting them.

If you would like to attend one of their many open days in Elstree and meet the ponies, you can take a look at their website here. We have been to visit and it was an absolute joy!
