Strawberry Roan, China

£14.00

Strawberry, Cacao, Honey

China may not be the first country one thinks of as an origin for specialty coffee - yet we feel we owe it to the team at Indochina Coffee for bringing this sensation to our attention way back in 2019 - a coffee that has only gone from strength to strength in the 7 years since then.

This coffee was produced and processed by Tang Xiang and Tian Cai, part of a small group of farmer families in Guiben, a remote part of Yunnan close to the Laos border. This province is traditionally associated with exceptional tea, but more recently it has gained significant attention for complex coffees with fruity, bright profiles.

Strawberry Roan reminds us of classic red and yellow teas. Sweet, subtle ferment-like profile, floral with a long and lingering strawberry finish. The name embraces those in our community celebrating Lunar New Year, with this year being the Year of the Horse.

Read about our story.

Coffee is a story.

Story

This coffee originates from a remote part of Yunnan, in an area traditionally famous for its exceptional tea. East of Pu’er City and close to the Laos border, the region is home to many ethnic minorities including Hani, Miao, Dai and others.

The production of this coffee is spearheaded by Mr Tian Cai, who is the Farm Operations Manager for our origin partners, Yunnan Coffee Traders (YCT), with family member Mr Tang managing the farm on a day to day basis. They belong to a small group of farmer families in the Guiben region of Yunnan province. Cherries are grown by these farms as well as purchased directly from nearby smallholder farmers.

Processing

This is a natural processed lot. On the same day as picking, ripe cherries are sealed in plastic drums to ferment anaerobically. They're then de-pulped at the wet mill and dried on raised beds until the required moisture/humidity is achieved. Beans are raked every 30 minutes while drying and hand-sorted to remove defective beans.
