Perched on a ridge high in the Andes mountains of Colombia’s Nariño department, the town of Buesaco is home to Promotora de Cafés de Altura. This cooperative operates offices, a cupping lab, and warehouses in the town, serving as a collection point for coffees grown by smallholders on the surrounding slopes.

The co-op meticulously cups coffees throughout the harvest to create lots that are uniform in bean size and consistent in cup profile. The Buesaco Washed lot exemplifies this dedication, offering a clean and balanced flavor. Producers fully wash their coffee on their farms before delivering it in parchment, ensuring quality at every stage. Known regionally for its high standards, Coop Especiales compensates farmers accordingly, fostering a strong reputation for fairness and excellence.

Beyond its impact on coffee production, the co-op plays a vital role in the local community by employing and training many of Buesaco’s young adults, providing both meaningful employment and valuable industry education.

Buesaco itself is a vibrant town, hosting an annual Carnaval filled with colorful costumes and parades. Many coffee producers live on their farms, cultivating additional crops alongside coffee, while Buesaco serves as a commercial hub with stores, offices, and community spaces, including a soccer field and gyms. Promotora de Cafés de Altura is managed by Jose and Karen Gomez, both of whom come from families with deep roots in coffee farming in the Buesaco region.
